Champions across the DIII ranks for 15s is the title the Wayne State College men’s rugby team will carry into the winter break avenging a loss in the last previous three championship matches.
Back at SaberCats stadium in Houston, Texas, #3 Wayne State College found themselves in their fourth straight 15s championship match.
In a low scoring match, it favored the Wildcats securing a 27-8 victory against #5 Holy Cross Sunday afternoon.
Wildcat scoring began early off a penalty kick leading 3-0 eight minutes into the match. Moving into the half, WSC held a 13-8 advantage and would eventually hold on for the 27-8 final.
Also, junior Trent Draper was named the 2024-25 MVP of the DIII finals.
The Wayne State College men’s 15s rugby team won five straight in the postseason to end the year at 9-1. Other wins came over #16 Xavier (61-3) in the round of 32; #17 St. Thomas (37-5) in the round of 16; #2 Slippery Rock (27-5) in the elite 8 and #14 Colorado School of Mines (46-15) in the final four. The lone Wildcat loss was against #19 Iowa Central Community College (42-20) on October 19 in Wayne. ICCC finished runner-up in the DI Rhino Bowl over the weekend in Houston.
