WSC soccer goes 0-1-1 in weekend home stand

The Wayne State women’s soccer team lost one match and tied the second in a recent weekend NSIC home stand at the WSC Soccer Pitch.

On Saturday, Minot State handed Wayne State a 2-0 defeat, scoring early and getting an insurance goal to post the shutout.

The Beavers came out the aggressor early in the contest and scored in the 12th minute on a free kick from Kelli Creese for a 1-0 lead at intermission. Minot State scored an insurance goal at the 62:11 mark from Sofia Lewis to finish off the victory.

Minot State held a 21-14 advantage in shots over the Wildcats, including 11-2 in shots on goal. The Beavers had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks and were called for 16 fouls to 12 on the Wildcats.

Rylie Wehner led Wayne State with three shots followed by Hannah Knight, Rachel Fraser and Alexis Strothers with two each. Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Grisham accounted for nine saves while allowing two goals in the loss.

On Sunday, Wayne State battled University of Mary to a 0-0 tie, as both teams had their chances to score but couldn’t find the back of the net.

Both teams had three shots in the first half with each team adding eight shots in the second half. The University of Mary had three shots in the first overtime period compared to one by the Wildcats. The Marauders followed by having three more shots in the second overtime period with Wayne State adding two shots. Sophie Ketchmark almost found the back of the net for the Wildcats with :11 remaining in the second overtime, but missed wide left.  

For the contest, Mary held a 17-14 advantage in shots over Wayne State and 7-4 in shots on goal. The Marauders edged the Wildcats 5-4 in corner kicks while Wayne State was called for 18 fouls compared to 17 on Mary.

Hannah Knight led the Wildcats with three shots (two on goal) while Shelby Bullard added three shots (one on goal). Grisham notched seven saves in the contest for the Wildcats. 

Wayne State (1-2-3, 0-1-2 NSIC) will be on the road Friday visiting Winona State in a 5 p.m. contest.
