The Wayne State softball team finished their annual spring break trip to Florida Thursday afternoon with two wins in the National Training Center Spring Games in Minneola, Fla.
The Wildcats closed the trip with a 4-2 win over St. Joseph’s of Indiana, getting 10 hits to end the week on a winning note.
The Wildcats opened the scoring in the first when Katelyn Wobken singled and scored on a passed ball. They extended the lead to 3-0 in the third when Emily Chandler came through with a two-run single that scored Melanie Alyea and Rachel Shumaker.
The Pumas got on the board in the fifth with a single run to make the score 3-1, but the Wildcats scored an insurance run in the sixth when Wobken doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Alyssa Schropp and went on to the win as St. Joseph’s left the bases loaded after scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh.
Wobken went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored while Chandler finished 3-for-4 with two RBI. Shumaker finished 2-for-4 with a pair of singles while Jordyn Breitbarth doubled. Nataliah Hopkins got the win in the circle, retiring the first nine batters she faced and finishing with five strikeouts, five hits allowed and one walk.
In the first game of the day, Abbie Hix went 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBI’s and Hopkins threw five scoreless innings to help Wayne STate to a 7-2 win over Concordia College of New York.
Hix hit her homer in the first inning with a two-run blast, and Wayne State extended the lead to 4-0 in the following innning on RBI doubles by Blair Shanks and Alyssa Schropp.
Concordia got a run in the sixth, but Wayne State put up three more in the seventh, using a Hix single and three Concordia errors.
Hopkins allowed five hits and four strikeouts in the win, with Allison Niemeier coming on for two innings of relief.
Wayne State, 4-14, resumes play on Friday, March 17 when they play at the Missouri Western Tournament in St. Joseph, Mo.
