WSC starts year at 3-1, drops four spots in rankings

Wayne America took over the Country Music Capitol of the World with season opening collegiate volleyball.

From Nashville, Tennessee, the 25th-ranked Wayne State College Wildcats went 3-1 during the Ray Thrasher Classic. Matches were played from September 4 - 6.

The Wildcats fell four spots in the first regular season ABCA/TARAFLEX Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll.

WSC began with a 3-0 sweep over Henderson State (AR) (25-19, 25-14, 25-18) on September 4, followed by sweeps against Alabama Huntsville (25-20, 26-24, 25-14) and Erskine College (SC) (25-10, 25-12, 25-6) on September 5 before closing out against the host Trevecca Nazarene with a four-set loss (18-25, 18-25, 25-15, 25-20) on September 6.

WSC begins the season at 3-1.

For the weekend Mattie Kamery averaged three kills per set finishing with a team-high 39 kills in four matches while also leading the team with nine service aces and tacking on 23 digs (1.77 per set).

Chloe Hanel hit .476 with 38 kills (2.92 per set) to go along with 10 blocks (one solo) as Channatee Robles tallied 34 total kills and 35 digs (2.69 per set).

Molly Romano averaged 9.46 assists per set totaling 123 assists on the weekend. She also recorded 32 digs (2.46 per set) and seven blocks.

Anna Borner led the dig department with 44 digs in 13 total sets played (3.38 average per set) with Reese Johnson adding 34 digs (2.62 per set).

The 25th-ranked Wayne State College volleyball team (171 points in voting by various DII coaches from across the country) will next travel to Denver, Colorado for the Premier Challenge September 12 - 13. WSC will face Lewis University (IL) at 11 a.m. CT followed by #3 MSU Denver at 3 p.m. CT both on Friday followed by two more matches on Saturday.
