WSC track gets wins at Mount Marty Twilight meet

Brock Hegarty, Cade Kalkowski and Mikhail Sands each won events to lead the Wayne State men’s outdoor track and field team Wednesday at the Mount Marty Twilight Meet in Yankton, S.D.

Hegarty crossed the line first in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:16.28, Kalkowski recorded a first place finish in the hammer throw at 190 feet, 8 inches and Sands was first in the long jump with a top leap of 21-2.

Second-place finishes were collected by Dylan Kaup in the hammer throw (186-10), Ben Allen in the shot put (51-4 1/4), Bryce Holcomb in the 800-meter run (1:55.78), Preston Davis in the 400-meter hurdles (55.08) and Dylan Kessler in the 5,000-meter run (16:14.27).

Aaron English was third in the high jump (6-0), Davis came in third place in the 110-meter hurdles (15.58), Nathan Pearson finished third in the 800-meter run (1:56.26) and Jack Doughty was third in the 5,000-meter run (16:19.94).

Jayle Hinkle took fourth in the shot put (50-9 1/4), Matthew Nemec was fifth in the discus (135-6) and sixth in the hammer throw (164-9) and Jacob Ladage was fourth in the 200-meter dash (23.28) and eighth in the 400 (52.15).

Bailey Peckham collected a fifth place finish in the 5,000-meter run (16:34.10) and Jakob Kemper was fifth in the 800-meter run at 1:59.21.

In women’s action, Mckenzie Scheil improved on her NCAA provisional mark in the hammer throw with a first-place finish at 182-8, good for 11th overall in NCAA Div. II. The Wildcats ended with five of the top seven finishers in the event, as Tia Jones took third (168-2), Nicole Heeren was fourth at 161-9, Sarah Stang fifth (155-6) and Kenzie Sullivan seventh with a mark of 149-6.

Jordyn Pester had a pair of second-place finishes in the 200-meter dash (26.10) and 400-meter dash (56.39). Allie Rosener also had a second place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 12:39.30 and Andrea Torres was second in the 5,000-meter run (20:03.24) with Amanda Mote third at 21:49.58.

Molli Vasa came in third in the 400-meter hurdles (1:07.04) with Ali Dykman had a third place finish in the high jump, clearing 5-0.

Riana Noelle recorded fourth-place finishes in the long jump (16-3 3/4) and the triple jump (33-1). Joan Jelimo was fourth in the 800-meter run (2:18.32) with Marin Jetensky fifth (2:22.61) and Kim Lowman eighth at 2:27.27.

In the discus, Sullivan came in third at 139-1 and Heeren was seventh at 116-4. Jones claimed a third-place finish in the shot put (44-8) with Stang sixth at 41-4 1/4 and Sullivan eighth (40-3 1/2).

Wayne State will compete again on Saturday at the Concordia Blizzard Buster in Seward, starting with field events at 12 p.m. and running events at 5 p.m.
