WSC volleyball beats three ranked teams to win Colorado Challenge

The Wayne State volleyball team made a statement over the weekend beating three ranked teams and sweeping Northern Sun Conference rival Concordia-St. Paul in straight sets to claim the Colorado Premier Championship tournament Saturday in Denver, Colo.

On Saturday, the 15th-ranked Wildcats took care of Azusa Pacific of California in four sets, 25-15, 18-25, 25-18, 25-10, and handled fifth-ranked West Florida, 25-17, 26-24, 25-17, to move into Saturday’s Gold Bracket play.

In the semifinals, Wayne State rode the career-high 20 kills of Maggie Brahmer to a five-set win over 12th-ranked West Texas A&M, winning 25-22, 13-25, 23-25, 25-22, 15-7, before disposing of NSIC rival and No. 6-rated Concorida-St. Paul in Saturday night’s championship match, 25-17, 25-23, 25-23.

Brahmer was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and shared All-Tournament Team honors with teammates Rachel Walker, Kelsie Cada and Taya Bellar.

Wayne State (8-0) was scheduled to play Monday at Chadron State before returning to Wayne for Friday’s home openers and Northern Sun Conference debuts against Concordia-St. Paul on Friday and Minnesota State on Saturday at Rice Auditorium.
