WSC wins twice Friday, takes series 3-1

A second and final afternoon of Wayne State College baseball concluded their four-game NSIC series at University of Mary.

Back at Municipal Ballpark in Bismarck, North Dakota, the Wildcats were in action on Friday against UMary.

Wayne State College picked up wins of 2-1 and 7-3 to win their third straight of the season and take the series, 3-1. The Wildcats improved to 14-11 (10-6 NSIC) as University of Mary fell to 12-13 (8-8 NSIC).

During Friday’s first game, two early runs were just enough for Wayne State College in the top of the first inning. Senior Taylor Gill drove in senior Chase Douglas as senior Quinn McCafferty added a RBI double scoring Gill.

Following back-to-back scoreless innings, University of Mary brought in one run.

Final favored Wayne State College winning 2-1 as both teams recorded six hits. UMary committed two errors compared to zero errors by WSC.

Chase Douglas singled twice and scored; Taylor Gill singled, drove in a run and scored as Quinn McCafferty doubled and drove in a run.

Junior Braden Cannon and sophomore Brayden Chaney both singled.

Senior Jackson Shelburne (pitch count NA) picked up the win in six innings allowing an earned run off six hits while striking out three batters. Cannon earned his fourth save of the season in the final inning striking out and walking one batter while forcing two flyouts.

From the final outing of the four-game series, University of Mary jumped ahead early with a 2-0 lead in the home half of the first inning.

After a scoreless second, Wayne State College plated one run in the top of the third. Chase Douglas used a RBI double scoring junior Casey Prychak.

The host Marauders extended their lead by answering with a single run a half of an inning later to go up 3-1.

Following three straight scoreless innings, the Wildcats began to put their scoring together with their first three-run inning to go up 4-3. Cannon, redshirt freshman Connor Hunt and Brayden Chaney all scored on a wild pitch.

WSC added three more runs in the top of the eighth. Sophomore Max Heard began with a solo homerun, senior Keagan McLaughlin followed with a RBI base hit scoring Gill as redshirt junior Cam Madsen used a RBI bases loaded walk scoring Cannon.

Final favored Wayne State College winning 7-3 despite being outhit, 9-8 and committing one error compared to zero by University of Mary.

Max Heard recorded a solo homerun and doubled; Casey Prychak singled, doubled and scored as Chase Douglas doubled and drove in a run.

Taylor Gill singled and scored; Keagan McLaughlin singled and drove in a run; Quinn McCafferty singled; Cam Madsen accounted for a RBI; Braden Cannon scored twice as Connor Hunt and Brayden Chaney both scored.

Senior Kadyn Van Hill (pitch count NA) picked up the win in an inning of work being the fifth pitcher on the mound of seven allowing two hits.

Senior Tyson Romero started two-thirds allowing two earned runs off one hit while striking out one batter, walking three and hitting one. Junior Clay Beaumont followed the next two and a third allowing an earned run off two hits while striking out four batters and walking one. Junior Clement Febus and senior Wayne native Jacob Kneilf were the third and fourth pitchers both in an inning allowing one hit while striking out one batter.

Following Van Hill, senior Adam Eggert pitched two innings allowing two hits while walking one batter as sophomore Conlin Grady closed out the final inning hitting one batter.

The Wayne State College baseball team is next scheduled to host Minnesota Duluth on Friday, April 4 at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, April 5 for a doubleheader starting at noon and conclude the four-game series on Sunday, April 6 at noon.
