WSC women collect two silvers, three records broken for men

Additional outdoor track & field student-athletes from Wayne State College put their talent to the test during weekend competition.

From the Lillibridge Track Complex in Vermillion, South Dakota, the Wildcat women picked up a pair of runner-up marks in the field while a trio of WSC men records were broken during the USD South Dakota Challenge on Saturday.

In the women’s division, sophomores Kailee Kellem and Torrance Tso were the top finishers for the ‘Cats, both finishing second in their events.

Kellum jumped 18′ 5 1/4″ in the long jump while Tso tossed out a throw of 158’ 10″ in the discus.

Senior Hailey Baker was the next highest finisher for the WSC women’s team as she finished third in the hammer throw with her new personal best on her sixth attempt at 176′ 1″.

Freshman Allie Czapla also crossed the finish line in the 3000-meter steeple with a new PR and fifth place finish with a time of 12:14.26.

During the men’s division, freshman Mitchell Hupp posted a new school record in the 200-meter dash with a winning time of 20.89 seconds, bettering the previous school mark of 20.99 second set by freshman Emmanuel Badejo in late March at the Wildcat Classic. Hupp also finished third in the 100m race with his time of 10.43.

Badejo broke the school record in the 400-meter dash crossing the line first in a time of 46.71 seconds. The old school record was set back in 1959 by Fred Kjer with a time of 48.36 seconds.

The final school record broken on Saturday was the men’s 4 x 100 relay quartet of freshman Luke Klabenes, Hupp, senior Wyatt Nissen and Badejo who took first place with a time of 40.78 seconds, topping the previous school record of 41.43 set in the 2015 season by Kole Heller, Braxton Adams, William Ernst and Derek Lahm.

All three new school records were NCAA provisional marks along with Wyatt Nissen’s time of 21.09 seconds in the 200-meter dash, good for third place in the event.

Freshman Mujeeb Adewuyi finished third in the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.70, senior Brandon Mitzel crossed the finish line third in the 3000m steeple with his time of 11:13.28 and Elliot Nottlemann jumped to fourth place in long jump with a leap of 23′ 1/2″.

The Wayne State College women’s and men’s outdoor track & field team will next compete on Saturday, April 19 during the Loper Invite in Kearney.
