For the first time since 2019, the Wayne State College women’s soccer team competed in the NSIC Tournament.
From The Pitch in Mankato, Minnesota, #8 Wayne State College opened postseason play against the NSIC regular season champion and #7 in DII women’s soccer, Minnesota State-Mankato on Monday.
The host Mavericks netted two early goals and held on for the 2-0 victory. #7 Minnesota State-Mankato improved to 13-1-5 overall while the Wildcats ended their season at 7-7-5.
First half goals were scored in the seventh (6:48) and 29th minutes (28:31). Neither team scored in the second half. Final favored #7 Minnesota State-Mankato winning 2-0.
Earlier this season, the Wildcats and Mavericks tied 0-0 on October 20 in Wayne. It snapped an 18-match losing streak to Minnesota State-Mankato dating back to the series opener in the 1998 season.
Riann Daas attempted three shots with one on goal. Erin Peters, Addison Walker, Reagan Allen and Alyssa Ferin all finished with a shot on goal. Morgan Rhodes also had a shot attempt.
Sidney Truman was in goal for all 90 minutes. She recorded 10 saves but allowed two goals.
Minnesota State-Mankato outshot WSC, 28-8 including 12-5 on goal. The Mavericks recorded six corner kicks compared to three by the Wildcats.
Other first round NSIC women’s soccer results favored #5 University of Mary held onto a 2-1 win against #4 St. Cloud State; #6 Minot State won 1-0 over #3 Augustana and #2 Concordia-St. Paul won 1-0 over #7 Bemidji State.
Semifinals are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 15 in Mankato, Minnesota opening with #2 Concordia-St. Paul vs. #6 Minot State at 10 a.m. followed by #1 Minnesota State-Mankato vs. #5 University of Mary at 1 p.m. The NSIC women’s soccer championship match to be held on Sunday, Nov. 17 in Mankato, Minnesota at 1 p.m.
