The Wayne State College women’s track and field team has earned the USTFCCCA (U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association) All-Academic award for a 19th straight season with a 3.454 grade point average while individuals Hailey Baker, Olivia Schwarzrock and Reilly Young collected All-Academic Athlete Awards announced Monday afternoon.
To qualify for the team academic award, an institution must record a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or higher while individual award winners must maintain a 3.25 grade point average and have achieved a provisional or automatic qualifying mark for the NCAA Indoor or Outdoor Championships.
Baker, a junior thrower from Blair, has a 3.544 grade point average majoring in foods and consumer science education. She was an NCAA provisional qualifier in the hammer throw during the outdoor season, collecting All-NSIC honors with a second-place finish at 177’ 7”. Baker also earned an eighth-place medal at the NSIC Indoor Championships in the weight throw (54’ 8 ¾”).
Schwarzrock, a sophomore thrower from Gibbon, Minnesota, recorded a 3.845 grade point average majoring in criminal justice. During the outdoor season, she placed fifth at the NSIC Championships in the hammer throw with a personal-best mark of 164’ 0” and made the finals just missing a medal with a ninth-place finish in the shot put at 41’ 2 ¼”. Schwarzrock also medaled in two events during the NSIC Indoor Championships capturing All-NSIC honors with a third-place finish in the weight throw (57’ 7 ½”) and was seventh in the shot put at 42’ ¾”.
She was a College Sports Communicators Academic All-District selection this season.
Young, a junior thrower from Scotia, is a repeat USTFCCCA All-Academic selection thanks to a 3.375 grade point average majoring in K-12 physical education. She medaled in two events at the NSIC Outdoor Championships, earning All-NSIC honors with a third-place mark in the discus (151’ 6”) while also finishing seventh in the hammer throw at 159’ 6”.
