Funeral services for Arvilla “Babs” Middleton, 89, of Wayne will now be held at 1 p.m.  Wednesday, Jan. 17 at First Presbyterian Church in Wayne. A reception will be hled immediately following the service. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to service time on Wednesday, Jan. 17 at First Presbyterian Church in Wayne. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Wayne.

Memorials may be directed to the Middleton family for later designation. 

Arrangements are with Hasemann Funeral Home of Wayne.

“Babs” Middleton died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024 at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk.

Arvilla Jean “Babs” Middleton was born March 28, 1934 on her parents farm near Dallas, South Dakota to Arnold and Lillian (Pochop) Tech. In 1937, while a small child, the family moved to a farm northwest of Osmond. She attended country school Districts #50 and #79 and Osmond High School. Babs married Leroy Middleton on Nov. 9, 1950 and the couple moved to Norfolk in 1951. In 1952, the couple moved to California, returning to Nebraska in 1954 to manage a grocery store in Magnet and then moved to Wayne in the summer of 1960.While living in Wayne, Babs cleaned houses before working for Wayne Marsh at the Wayne Book Store for 10 years and then at Peoples Natural Gas Company for 20 years, retiring in 1995. During her retirement years, she worked part time at the Edward Jones office in Wayne. Babs was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she had served as a past deacon, a member of the women's association (Presbyterian Women), and the sewing souls group. Also active in the Wayne community, she was a former Girl Scout Leader and a Cub Scout Den Mother, a charter member of the Wayne Eagles Auxiliary Arie #3757 where she held various offices, a member of the Wayne Women's Club, a past board member of the Wayne Red Cross Chapter, member of the Red Hat Society and a Wayne Senior Center Volunteer. She enjoyed her family activities, playing cards, dancing, reading, flowers and going to coffee with friends.

Survivors include her children, Gail (Dan) Jaeger of Winside, Pam (David) McCall of Phoenix, Arizona and Mark (Mary) Middleton of Urbandale, Iowa, and; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; siblings, Marjorie Koch of Columbus, Robert  Tech of Punkin Center, Arizona and Kenneth (Marty) Tech of Norfolk; nieces; nephews; cousins and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Louie Zautke; husband, Leroy, in December 2001; twin infant sons, Ricky and Randy in 1957; sister-in-law, Barbara Tech; and brother-in-law, Ray Koch.
