Marlin Arthur Henry Westerhaus was born May 26, 1931 to Arthur and Anna (Loehing) Westerhaus. Marlin was baptized July 26, 1931 and confirmed Dec. 10, 1944. He was a lifetime member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Winside. The oldest of three boys, he grew up on the farm east of Winside and attended District 40 through eighth grade.

Marlin enlisted in the US Airforce Jan. 8, 1952. He was assigned to the 55th Field Maintenance Mapping and Charting Squadron. Once when flying from England to Florida, the Co-Pilot asked Marlin if he wanted to take the controls. Marlin flew the plane from Boston, past the Statue of Liberty — ironically the same route the terrorists flew on Sept. 11, 2001. Marlin was honorably discharged Dec. 19, 1955 and moved to St. Louis, Missouri where he was employed at Boeing as an Aircraft Electrician.

Marlin met LuAnna Moore prior to his enlistment in the Air Force. They were married Aug. 17, 1957 at Pilgrim Lutheran Church St. Louis, Missouri. Born to this union were David, Daniel, Dale and Dean. Marlin and LuAnna (Annie) made their first home in St. Louis, later moving east of Winside to the family farm in 1959. They took great pride in raising their boys, farming, gardening, raising chickens, ducks, and much more. Marlin was a rural mail carrier and a 36-year member of the American Legion. He was fond of collecting post cards, license plates, coins, stamps, pencils and more.

Left to cherish Marlin’s memory are sons, David (LeeAnn) of Pilger, Daniel (Donna) of Wayne, Dale (Amy) of Winside, and Dean (Marni) of Lexington; grandchildren, Shella (Jeff), Jesse (Amy), Karl, Tom, Brandon, Tanner, Mitchell, Dustin, Shelby, and Raven; great-grandchildren, Noah, Isaac, Briar, Landon, Xander, Karsten, and Kristen; sister, Jerane Dobson; and sisters-in-law, Annika Moore and Carolyn (Hail-Westerhaus) Schwenk.

Marlin was preceded in death by his wife, LuAnna on April 23, 2023; parents, Art and Anna Westerhaus; in-laws, Ralph and Gladys Moore; brothers, Norris, Donald and wife Reba Westerhaus; sister-in-law, Maye and husband Marvin Stotler; brothers-in-law, Jim Moore, Roy and wife Twilla Moore, Don and wives Gene and Anne Moore.
