Eric "Vito" Cole started his music venture roughly 30 years ago at the age of 23. Since then, Cole has rocked out in bands, written original music, toured the country and influenced countless other musicians.

For all these reasons and more, Matt Casey, president of the Nebraska Music Hall of Fame, and other board members, decided to induct Cole this year.

The official induction celebration will take place during the Nebraska Rocks event July 21 and 22 at the Divots Ballroom in Norfolk.

Anyone may attend the event, with rates starting at $20, but Casey recommends only those 21 and up attend.

Casey's father, Jim Casey, started the nonprofit organization in 1994, after realizing the need and want for Norfolk to revive its music scene.

The Hall of Fame continued to grow every year, eventually picking up members from across the state and having another hub in Omaha.

"When we expanded with Omaha and to western Nebraska, we were able to more comprehensively honor the musicians from across the state," Casey said. "I feel honored that we get to keep doing this and further the legacy my dad started."

Casey said his father had a special interest in Cole, saying he served his due diligence with vibe, heart and spirit.

It was only a matter of time before the Wayne native received his well-deserved recognition, Casey said.

"The Hall of Fame inducts all kinds of people, even venues, promoters and fans," Casey said. "As for singers and songwriters, we don't only induct those who have a lot of success. We also recognize those who have had impacts on their communities."

Cole certainly embodies these aspects, Casey explained. The board also took a keen interest on the musician because of his songwriting ability and self-promoted music.

"Cole has had about 30 years in music," Casey said. "As part of several bands, his original classics have become legendary. And he still continues to work on his writing. He has done it all and earned his stripes. We are excited to introduce this next generation of musicians to the Hall of Fame."

Over the years, the Hall of Fame museum, located in Norfolk, has collected memorabilia from musicians across the state. Casey hopes to add pieces of Cole's collection to the museum for the public to view.
