The Wayne High bowlers dominated the four-team field to claim both team and individual titles at Thursday’s Wayne Invitational, held at Wildcat Lanes.
The boys were tested only once in their opening head-to-head dual with Hartington/Newcastle. The visiting Wildcats made it close at the end before Wayne won the team score 890-868 and took the match 6-2. Zane Sievers (195), Konnor Kai (185) and Aiden Petersen (183) were individual winners, with Ben Haschke adding a 180 and Jaden Dramse a 144.
Sievers got hot in the second match with Columbus Lakeview, bowling a 277 to lead the Blue Devils to a 1,042-845 win and a 7-1 match win. Dramse and Dylan Jensen shot 148, Haschke had a 191 and Kai added a 203 for the win. Aiden Petersen added a 223.
In the final head-to-head setup, Wayne easily won 988-610 for an 8-0 sweep, getting wins from Jensen (237), Sievers (179), Haschke (182), Kai (195) and Petersen (195).
In the four-team Baker tournament, Wayne handled Plainview 3-0 and defeated Columbus Lakeview in four games to finish as tournament champions. Sievers was the individual medalist and Petersen finished third.
In girls action, Wayne rolled to three easy wins in head-to-head and swept Plainview and Hartington-Newcastle in the Baker series to take top honors.
Against Hartington-Newcastle, Wayne won 754-504 and earned an 8-0 sweep with wins from Joslyn Johnson (160), Graycen Trautman (141), Nina Hammer (140), Lindsay Niemann (146) and Jersi Jensen (167).
In the second game, the Blue Devils shot the second-highest team score in history with a 911-586 win. Winners were Johnson (188), Trautman and Regan Fernau (157), Hammer and Sammi Gubbels (164), Niemann (194) and Jensen (208).
In the third game, Wayne won over Plainview 868-551 with wins by Johnson (170), Trautman (147), Hammer and Gubbels (162), Niemann (236) and Jensen (153). Niemann, Jensen and Johnson were the top three individual medalists on the day.
In Baker action, Wayne swept Plainview in three games and needed clutch throws in the final two frames to finish off a three-game sweep of Hartington-Newcastle to claim the title.
"I was super pleased with how both teams shot today,” coach Josh Johnson said. “With five days off, you never know how much rust there will be. Both teams knocked that off quickly and really bowled well. Each bowler, regular or sub, gave extremely quality frames and throws. Now we need to work on ourselves and try to put together a quality January."
