Commissioners discuss insurance, lawn care

Two agenda items took up the majority of Tuesday's meeting of the Wayne County Board of Commissioners.

Scott Watters with Warnemunde Insurance was at the meeting to discuss proposed insurance addendums to the county's property insurance. This was specifically in regard to wind and hail deductibles on the county's buildings.

Information was shared on a policy through Underwriters of Lloyd, which could have either a $25,000 deductible or $50,000 to help offset the current deductible through the main insurance provider, Travelers Insurance.

Watters talked about differences in coverage and how each policy works. He noted that the county's wind and hail coverage currently has two separate parts - one for the courthouse specifically and one for the remainder of the buildings owned by the county.

The other agenda item that resulted in considerable discussion was the county's lawn care service contract for work at the courthouse.

Commissioner Dean Burbach said he has had some concerns with the quality of mowing this season.

Commissioners discussed the price difference between what White Dog Lawn Service is currently charging ($200 for each time the lawn is mowed) and what Hytrek Lawn Service would charge ($100 more per mowing).

After discussion, it was decided to remain with White Dog Lawn Service for the remainder of this season and re-bid the mowing contract for next year.

Also on the commissioners' agenda was an update on an application for money from the state of Nebraska for bridge replacement.

Highway Superintendent Kyle Huff shared information on a bridge in each of the commissioners' districts that could be eligible for funding in the future.

After discussion, it was determined a bridge northwest of Carroll, in District 2, would be the most likely (although there is no guarantee) of receiving a share of the $4 million that will be available to projects from across the state.

The Wayne County Board of Commissioners will next meet in regular session on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 9 a.m. in the Wayne County Courtroom.
