Fire department responds to scene of gas leak
A gas leak was reported on South Douglas Street at approximately 6 p.m. on Thursday (Sept. 28).
Crews working in the area hit a gas line in the alley in that area.
The Wayne Police Department, the Wayne Volunteer Fire Department and crews from the gas company responded to the scene.
According to Wayne Fire Chief Phil Monahan, "everything was marked but a pipe was struck. It included a "Y" pipeline and the gas company had to dig two holes around the area to clamp the line and shut off the gas to the area."
Because of this, an entire city block was evacuated while the incident was brought under control. Tools from Norfolk were brought in to assist with securing the line.
Monahan said members of his department were on scene until approximately 8:30 p.m.
