Four Wildcat tracksters honored

The Wayne State College men’s track and field team and four individuals earned All-Academic honors announced by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association office.

The Wildcat team posted a 3.294 cumulative grade-point average to earn the team honor for a 14th consecutive year while Grant Fritsch, Dylan Kneifl, Logan Moeller and Debonaire Williams were recognized with individual honors. 

To qualify for the team academic award, an institution must record a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher while individual award winners must maintain a 3.25 grade-point average and have achieved a provisional or automatic qualifying mark for the NCAA Indoor or Outdoor Championships.

Fritsch recorded a 3.314 grade point average majoring in science education/skill and technology and is a first-time USTFCCCA All-Academic selection.  He was eighth in the hammer throw (163-2) at the NSIC Outdoor Championships this spring and posted an NCAA provisional mark during the indoor season in the weight throw placing fourth at the NSIC Indoor Championships (59-7).

Kneifl is a USTFCCCA All-Academic selection for a third straight year thanks to a 3.372 grade point average majoring in industrial technology/construction management.  He was a national outdoor qualifier in the high jump for a second straight season, earning All-American Second Team honors with an 11th place finish while winning the high jump at the NSIC Outdoor Championships (6-7 1/2).  Kneifl was also an indoor All-American Second Team honoree and set new school records this season in the high jump, clearing 7-0 1/4 during the outdoor season and 6-10 3/4 during the indoor season.

Moeller was named USTFCCCA All-Academic Team for a second straight season with a 3.494 grade average majoring in industrial technology/construction management.  He was a national qualifier in the long jump during the outdoor season and placed third in the long jump (23-9 1/2) and fifth in the triple jump at the NSIC Championships. During the indoor season Moeller set a new school record at 24-0 3/4 in the long jump to place fifth while also placing seventh in the triple jump (45-9 1/4).

Williams maintained a 3.642 grade point average majoring in communication studies/theater arts. He was the NSIC decathlon champion during the outdoor season scoring 6,308 points and recorded an NCAA provisional mark during the indoor season with 4,719 points to place third in the heptathlon.
