'I Wet My Plants' flower shop blooms in downtown Wayne

Fresh florals, gifts galore, charcuterie platters and soon-to-be wine and craft nights have made their way to downtown Wayne in the form of a blossoming flower shop.

I Wet My Plants, located at 221 Main Street, opened just over a month ago on April 7.

Owner Katelyn Broders, along with her husband, Coleman, came up with the idea for the shop while driving past the for-sale space on their way out to eat.

Broders, always having an aptitude for crafts and design, had wanted to open an artsy business for awhile, she said.

To gain experience in arrangements and business practices, Broders worked at Sisters Floral in Emerson, helping with daily orders, packaging, delivery and servicing weddings.

This expertise, Broders passed on to her two staff members, Delaney Hardies and Rebecca Valdez.

To Hardies, composing the website, iwetmyplantsne.com, the company's social media, @iwetmyplantsne, and creating forms for customer use has acted as the best part of the budding company.

"We each have different  talents and approaches to problem solving and it has been so great to see how our collaboration has led to growth," Hardies said.

The business offers fresh floras, delivery services, candy, gifts, t-shirts, and more. Currently, they have worked to roll out men's gifts, just in time for Father's Day.

Broders came up with the idea for the name of the business while brainstorming with friends. Among a plethora of other options, I Wet My Plants kept standing out to the group.

Since then, most every customer comments on the hilarity of the name, Valdez said.

Recently, the shop created flower arrangements for a funeral, Valdez remembered. The daughters of the woman who passed away commented on how their late mother would have found the name funny and they just had to purchase flowers.

Soon, the shop hopes to introduce wine and craft nights, called "Nights on Main," pending the approval of their liquor license.

These will include building terrariums, putting together bouquet arrangements and more, along with wine. More information will be available on their website in the near future.

I Wet My Plants, though currently open to customers, will present its grand opening on Aug. 4, hosting Chamber Coffee and an open house.

"I feel excited to build a family footprint in the Wayne Community," Broders said, "servicing the people we care about most."
