Plans underway for Winside's Old Settlers

Area residents are being encouraged to make plans to attend this year's Winside Old Settlers events, scheduled for Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 15-18.

The event kicks off Thursday with a program entitled "Nebraska Territory, 1854-1859 - The Mad Queen of the Prairies" presented by Jeff Barnes. It will be held at the Lied Winside Public Library.

Friday's  schedule includes a Slow Pitch Softball Tournament at Weible Field beginning at 5 p.m. The double elimination tournament includes cash prizes and a traveling trophy.

A Kids Water Obstacle Course will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the tennis court.

A 5K/1 mile Walk/Run will begin at 7 p.m. at the Tennis Court.

Saturday's events start with the seventh annual Sand Volleyball Tournament at 8 a.m. The double elimination tournament includes cash prizes and a traveling trophy.

A 10-point Pitch Tournament will begin at 9 a.m. at the auditorium. A cash prize will be awarded to the winner. A Bloody Mary Bar will be available at the same time.

A corn hole tournament will be held on Main Street, starting at  1 p.m.

The Lawn Mower & Golf Cart Poker Run begin at 4 p.m. at T3 Ag Repair. No ATVs or UTVs will be allowed to be a part of this event.

The Traveling Tiger Tavern Food Truck will be on Main Street, beginning at 5 p.m. and the Craft Show starts at 5 p.m. at the park.

The Winside Alumni Banquet, honoring all classes that end in "3" will be held at the auditorium. All alumni and spouses are welcome.

The final event of the evening will be a Street Dance, featuring  Pioneer from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. on main Street.

Sunday's activities include a Craft Show at the park from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., food at the auditorium from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., the eighth annual Gene Topp Memorial Car Show from 1 to 4 p.m. and an open house and book sale at the Lied Winside Public Library.

The Winside Museum will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. and a bounce house and face painting will be available at the park.

One of the highlights of Sunday will be the Parade of Wheels at 2 p.m. on Main Street. Youth may enter two-wheeled, three-wheeled, four-wheeled and battery operated entries. However, gas-powered entries will not be allowed.

From 2 to 4 p.m. the Burt Heithold Band will provide music in the auditorium and beginning at 2:30 p.m., a five-point pitch tournament will be held at the American Legion hall.
