'Shooting Stars' shines bright

From New Jersey, Mary Angers did art even before she started school. As a young girl, she found joy in every form of art. Since then, she has specialized in two forms, oil painting and sculpting. In Wayne, her sculpture entitled “Shooting Stars,” has shone in front of the library since early this summer.

Angers knew she loved working hands-on with art, but wanted to also bring in different aspects of design, she said. Because of this, when she received her degrees, she added graphic design into the mix. She attended Rutgers University for her BA, Parsons School of Design for her BFA and then received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York.

For the piece in Wayne, Angers came up with the idea from looking out her bedroom window. She had seen a single shooting star cross the sky one night and knew she wanted to create something in its likeness. The artist designed the sculpture on her computer and Drew Weber, also from New Jersey, did the welding.

Angers has had pieces in sculpture walks across the country.

“It means the world to me to be part of these shows,” Angers said. “It allows me to share my art with people who never would have seen it otherwise. I truly love what I do.”
