Six Wildcats recognized for academics

Six players from the Wayne State College men’s basketball team were recognized as members of the 2022-23 National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court that represents outstanding achievement in the classroom by men’s college basketball student-athletes. 

Wildcats honored include Noah Erickson, Jordan Janssen, Cody McCullough, Nate Mohr, Jay Saunders and Sean Stokes. The NABC Honors Court includes junior, senior and graduate student men’s basketball players who finished the 2022-23 year with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 or higher.

Erickson, a junior forward, maintained a 3.31 grade-point average majoring in sport management this season. He appeared in 24 games and averaged 1.6 points and 1.5 rebounds per contest. Erickson also earned NSIC All-Academic honors this season.

Janssen, a graduate student, is a three-time recipient of the NABC Honors Court Award and had a 3.77 grade-point average pursuing a master’s degree in business administration. He was a First Team All-NSIC, NABC All-Central Region First Team and D2CCA All-Central Region Second Team selection after averaging 19.9 points and 8.1 rebounds per game this season. Janssen was a College Sports Communicators Academic All-District selection and became the first-ever Academic All-American men’s basketball player at WSC this season, earning Second Team honors.

McCullough, a junior center, carried a 3.74 grade-point average this season majoring in finance and economics. He started 28 of 29 games this season and accounted for 8.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game for the Wildcats. McCullough earned NSIC All-Academic Excellence honors and was voted to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team.

Mohr, a graduate student guard, recorded a 3.21 grade-point average majoring in education. He was named All-NSIC Second Team this season after averaging 13.5 points per game while leading the team in 3-point field goals with 76. He was named to the NSIC All-Academic Team.

Saunders, a junior guard, had a 3.35 grade-point average majoring in sport management. He started all 29 games this season averaging 6.3 points and 3.5 rebounds per contest. He was named NSIC Winter All-Academic Team and served as Vice-President of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee.

Stokes, a junior guard, produced a 3.22 grade-point average majoring in applied human and sport physiology. He appeared in 15 games this season recording 1.1 points and 1.0 rebounds per contest for the Wildcats.
