Sorority sisters share college memories

Rounding out a series of "sister" visits to the Rose Cottage in Wayne during the month of October were several members of the Theta Phi Alpha sorority.

The Rose Cottage was once home for the sorority.

Michelle Hilding, Michelle Lundy, Kathy Miller and Kristin Henkenius spent the night at the Bed & Breakfast during their visit to Wayne for Wayne State College Homecoming activities.

Rose Cottage is owned by Elizabeth King. King's daughter, Rachel, is part of Theta Phi Alpha, and let the women know that her mother was turning their former sorority house into a Bed & Breakfast.

"The Greek system brings us back to the campus a couple of times a year. It connected us as college students and made us life-long friends. It has made us want to come back to campus," Henkenius said.

The women were able to tour the Wayne State campus and said some of the "coolest changes" were the library - it isn't dark and dungy, the lower level of the Student Center and for Kristin, who earned a degree in Family and Consumer Sciences, the remodeled Benthack Hall.

While they were members of a sorority, the women did live in the dorms on campus.

The women shared a number of stories of how they became part of the sorority and stressed the friendships they developed, both with the members of their sorority and others sororities and fraternities on campus.

In addition to the sororities on campus, members of the Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) fraternity also took part in the Homecoming activities last month.

"As TKEs, we are all close friends. We met at Wayne through the Greek system and do lots of things together. It is amazing how our short time here shaped the rest of our lives," said Kristin's husband, Joe.

While in Wayne, the group was able to take part in the Greek Olympics, a tradition connected to Homecoming each year.

As far as being able to stay in the former sorority house, all the women agreed that it was a "wonderful experience."

"Elizabeth did a good job of connecting with us. She had cookies in our sorority colors, a welcome sign and made everything personalized," the women said.

Throughout the weekend, the group continued to reminisce about how they first became involved with Greek life, the friendships developed and how these friendships have developed throughout their lives.
