Sorority sisters visit Wayne, share stories

Although it has been more than 40 years since they were Wayne State College students, four members of the Kappa Delta Gamma sorority were back in Wayne to visit the campus and stay in what was once a sorority house.

Wilma Kapes, Lynette Turner, Marilyn Mejstrik and Christina Reinig were all members of the sorority from 1977 - 1981.

Kapes, who grew up in Iowa, said she had been to the campus for music camp and chose to come WSC to pursue a degree in education. She taught kindergarten for 37 years.

Turner grew up at Battle Creek and also came to WSC because of music. She has been involved with education for 39 years and is currently an adjunct professor at Creighton University.

Mejstrik, originally from Arlington, taught first and second grade for 37 years, most recently at Elkhorn.

Reinig grew up at Palmer and taught sixth grade for 19 years before becoming a gifted facilitator at Gretna. She has been involved with real estate sales for the past 21 years.

"When we were at Wayne State, there were three sororities and three fraternities on campus. We all did a lot of things for the community," Reinig said.

The women recall at least 40 women in each of the sororities and talked about the feeling of family and sisterhood within each of the sororities.

They noted that the Kappa Delta Gamma house was located in what was formerly the President's house. It was located in the area that is now a parking lot just east of Morrey Hall.

As sorority sisters, the ladies visited different churches during their time in Wayne and completed a number of philanthropic events for different charities.

Among the memories the women have are those of competing in Greek Olympics and the feelings of warmth between the sorority sisters.

The recent visit to Wayne was brought about because Christina and Elizabeth King have known each other since their college days.

"Even though I haven's seen her in years, I do follow her on Facebook. I saw that she had opened a Bed & Breakfast called the Rose Cottage. The four of us generally get together two or three times a year and decided it would be fun to come back to Wayne. When we picked the date, we didn't know it was Homecoming Week at Wayne State, but it was appropriate that we came this week," Christina said.

While in Wayne, the women visited the campus and commented on the changes - especially to Benthack and the Fine Arts Building. At the book store they purchased shirts that said 'Alumni" and enjoyed wearing them on their stay in Wayne.

Lynette and her husband have friends in Wayne, so have visited the community on numerous occasions since graduation. However, the other three women have only been back once or not at all.

"As we walked around campus and met students, they were all very social. We were able to still feel the community that is part of the campus," Lynette said.

Throughout their visit to Wayne, the women reminisced about the feeling of family they had while being part of the sorority and the community. They shared laughs when talking about the places they knew from their college days and promised to return to their alma mater.
