The Little Red Hen Theatre announces auditions for A Christmas Carol

The Little Red Hen Theatre is calling for local actors of all ages and types to bring their best “Bah-Humbug” to audition for the holiday classic “A Christmas Carol” on Oct. 13 and 14.

This is not the first time that the Little Red Hen has tackled the beloved Christmas ghost story of Dickens, having produced it previously in 2008 and 1993, but this most recent production promises something a little different than those stagings.

The script, adapted by Doris Baizley and originally produced at the Mark Taper forum in Los Angeles, reimagines the story as told by a company of traveling players. The rag-tag troupe of performers has seen better days, but rises above their shabby and third-rate props, grumpy stage manager and a missing leading man to create magic with mime, imagination and visual effects – infusing their story with the spirit of Christmas.

The production will be directed by T. Adam Goos, who encourages actors of all abilities and types, ages six and older, to come to auditions and participate. Goos says this production of A Christmas Carol “is a great opportunity to participate in something creative – either by yourself or with family and friends. I can’t think of a more fun way to ring in the holidays than helping bring this magical story of redemption and second chances to life”.

The Little Red Hen said it will work to find a place for all those who are interested in being a part of the show, regardless of ability or experience. The script offers roles of various sizes, ranging from small character parts to the main character of Scrooge, who spends most of the show on the stage.

Those who are interested in being part of the production should sign up for an audition date and time on the theatre’s website. Auditions will be held on Friday, Oct. 13 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. An audition packet, which includes a draft rehearsal calendar and information about the show and production process can be accessed on the theatre’s website at www.littleredhentheatre.com.

For those who may be wary about auditioning, Goos has some words of encouragement. “Auditions at the Little Red Hen are more of a workshop experience, where interested performers get a chance to know each other, play some theatre games and then do a little script reading – it’s actually quite a bit of fun, and we work to make it as stress free as possible”.

The performances for A Christmas Carol will be Dec. 8, 9 and 10. Rehearsals will begin the last week of October and generally run Monday – Thursday in the evenings.
