Top-ranked ‘Cats roll Eagles in three

Senior Kelsie Cada and freshman Channatee Robles combined for 24 kills and a .378 hitting percentage to lead the top-ranked Wayne State volleyball team in a 25-17, 25-16, 25-18 sweep over in-state opponent Chadron State College in Tuesday action at Rice Auditorium in Wayne.

Wayne State never trailed on the night. They ran out to a 12-5 lead in the first set on their way to the easy win, hitting .424 as a team with Cada’s five kills and two service aces highlighting the win.

Wayne State led by as many as 12 at 21-9 after a six-point run to take the 2-0 advantage, led buy Robles’ four kills and three each for Cada and Taya Beller.

In the final set, Chadron got as close as 21-17 before Wayne State closed strong, finishing the match with a Maggie Brahmer-Taylor Bunjer combination block to improve to 9-1 on the season.

Wayne State finished the match with a .272 hitting percentage while holding Chadron State to .104. The ‘Cats held a 45-25 edge in kills and 59-48 in digs while out-blocking the Eagles 8-5. WSC also held a 7-4 edge in service aces.

Cada had 13 kills to pace WSC followed by Robles with a season-high 11 kills and .381 hitting percentage. Brahmer accounted for nine kills and a team-high five blocks. Libero Jordan McCormick posted a team-leading 16 digs while setter Rachel Walker handed out 38 set assists. Junior Havyn Heinz had three service aces, matching a career-high, followed by Cada and Beller with two aces each.

The Wildcats return to NSIC play this weekend with road matches at Sioux Falls Friday at 6 p.m. and at No. 9-rated Southwest Minnesota State Saturday at 4 p.m.
