Top-ranked Wildcats cruse past Mary in three

Top-ranked Wayne State rolled to an easy win over University of Mary on Saturday, recording an easy 25-4, 25-9, 25-15 win over the Marauders at Rice Auditorium.

The Wildcats set the table from the start, scoring the first 17 points in the opening set. Taya Beller was 7-of-7 in hitting and Channattee Robles added five kills to lead the Wildcat net attack. Havyn Heins recorded to serice aces in a 16-serve run after Mary served the opening point of the match.

Wayne State continued its dominance in the second set as six different players had kills in the second-set win, hitting .393 as a team with Kelsie Cada’s four kills leading the way.

Mary led 3-2 early in the third set, but Wayne State would go on a run to reclaim the lead and went on to post the easy win to improve to 23-1 overall and 14-0 in NSIC competition.

The Wildcats hit .400 as a team while Mary hit minus-.010. WSC had 10 blocks and five service aces in the win.

Beller’s 14 kills and .545 hitting percentage led Wayne State, followed by Cada with 10 kills and 10 digs for a double-double.

Beller and Maggie Brahmer each recorded four blocks while Heinz and Robles each had two service aces.  Heinz had a team-high 13 digs with setter Rachel Walker adding 11 digs and 33 set assists for her 10th double-double of the sesason.

The Wildcats will be at home again Tuesday evening, hosting No. 6 Southwest Minnesota State in the annual Blackout Night match in Rice Auditorium starting at 6 p.m.
