Wildcats fall to Creighton in exhibition debut

Creighton hit 11 3-pointers in the first half and posted a 95-48 win over the Wayne State men’s basketball team in an exhibition Friday at the CHI Health Center in Omaha.

The Wildcats couldn’t keep up with the long-range shooting of the Div. I No. 8-ranked Bluejays after getting to within two at 7-5 on an Alec Millender 3-pointer with 18:14 to go in the first half. Creighton followed with an 11-0 run and built a 27-11 lead midway through the first half on their way to a 49-24 halftime advantage.

Creighton’s Trey Alexander and WSC’s Trey Deveaux traded baskets to open the second half, and the Bluejays followed that with an eight-point run to lead 59-26.

Wayne State was able to get as close as 69-39 with less than 12 minutes to go, but that’s as close as the Div. Ii Wildcats would get as both teams played everybody who suited up for the season-opening conteest.

Creighton shot 52.9 percent from the field, including 16-of-38 from 3-point range, and were led by Trey Alexander with 22 points while Steven Ashworth, Baylor Scheierman and Jonathan Lawson each had 12 points.

Deveauxh led the Wildcats with 14 points and six rebounds while Milender added 13 points. WSC shot 30.6 percent from the floor and were 2-of-12 from 3-point range.

The Wildcat men play their first regular-season contest on Friday Nov. 10 in the Puerto Rico Classic in San Juan, Puerto Rico, facing Sagrado Corazon at 10 a.m.
