Collaboration leads to plans for housing in Wayne

Wayne Community Housing Development Corporation (WCHDC), Woehler & Sons Construction and Professor Steve Hardy with his ASSIT students from the University of Nebraska recently showcased their collaborative work on a housing project for the city of Wayne.

The May 12 event at the Wayne Auditorium highlighted a semester-long project that partnered Wayne Community Housing Development Corporation, Woehler & Sons Construction, and University of Nebraska Lincoln (ASSIST program).

Dr. Mytzy Rodriguez-Kufner, the Executive Director of WCHDC, along with B.J. Woehler, an architect by training, worked with Professor Steve Hardy at UNL and his students on this project from January through May.

Dr. Rodriguez-Kufner originally reached out to Professor Hardy in the fall of 2022, as well as presented this concept as part of the annual report to the Wayne City Council in November of 2022. WCHDC as an organization and Professor Hardy also reached out to Dr. Laura Dendinger at Wayne State College to create a cohesive environment where there was intercollegiate collaboration with Dr. Denginger’s class (in the form of marketing).

B.J. Woehler met regularly with the students to provide architectural feedback to their projects throughout the semester.

The students came to Wayne to interact with the community during a pancake feed on Feb. 21, walked throughout the City of Wayne to gather visual information, and conducted a few activities to gather information about the community’s needs at Ekeko Galleries.

The UNL ASSIST program has worked with many other communities in Nebraska and creates plans that highlight housing development. Many of the communities throughout Nebraska usually develop these projects further and into fruition.

The housing development presentation provides the community with ideas for future housing development.

Anyone who would like more information or who would like to look at pictures of all that was accomplished, is asked go to Wayne Community Housing Development Corporation’s Facebook page.
