Officials at Laurel-Concord-Coleridge school are making changes in their check-in system in response to an incident Friday that led to an individual being taken into protective custody.
At about 10:40 a.m. Friday, the school was placed in lockdown after an unidentified person entered the building. Students and staff were removed from the area, and the individual was isolated with designated school personnel until law enforcement could arrive at the scene.
Authorities from the Laurel Police Department, Cedar County Sheriff’s Office and the Nebraska State Patrol were on the scene, as a 32-year old female was taken into emergency protective custody. The lockdown was lifted about 25 minutes after it had been instituted.
In response to Friday’s events, the school announced on its Facebook page late Sunday that tighter security measures will be put in place for those who visit the school.
“As you visit Laurel-Concord-Coleridge School/Laurel Public LIbrary you may notice some changes and we ask everyone to plan ahead as it may take a little longer to check-in if you are visiting our school system,” the Facebook post stated.
Starting Monday, those not employed by the school will be required to wear a name tag from the school’s check-in system. During school hours, nobody from the public will be allowed into the school side of the library without first receiving a name tag.
If a class is using the school side of the library, the public will not be allowed in the school side of the library, the post added.
