OMAHA — Wayne came home empty-handed during the 2024 Nebraska State Track and Field Championships, but the two-day meet wasn’t without its share of exciting moments.
In boys action, senior Mason Ley tied the school record in the pole vault Thursday with a best effort of 13 feet, matching the mark set by Mason Reynolds in 2017.
Ley had a chance to set a new standard, just missing on his second attempt at 13-6 when his torso just barely clipped the bar, bouncing it off the standard as he fell to the mat. He missed on his third attempt and finished 16th out of 24 competitors in the Class B boys pole vault.
Sophomore Grant Maas also competed in the event and finished 18th at 12-6. Both he and Ley started at 12 feet and were successful in their first attempt at that height and 12-6. Maas was unable to clear 13 feet in his three attempts.
In action Wednesday, sophomore Elle Powicki just missed making the finals in the Class B girls 100-meter hurdles. Her time of 15.62 seconds and missed qualifying by 14 hundredths of a second.
Sophomore Nyla Bolles ran a 1:03.69 in the girls 400-meter dash and placed 23rd overall.
In boys action, sophomore Drew Miller was 20th in the 3,200-meter run with a personal-best time of 10:15.09. Junior Isaiah Yarde competed in the high jump, but did not clear the opening height of 5-10.
