December 24, 1964 — Wedding day, Christmas at Winside blackened by fire

Christmas in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Wylie of Winside will not be the holiday they planned. Ther home, which was once a hospital, burned to the ground in sub-freezin temperatures Sunday. Mrs. wylie thought she smelled gas in one room. When her husband checked, he found a blaze already started around a wall furnace. It was a little after 11. Five hours later the remains were smoldering in the basement. Firemen from Winside and Wayne battled the flames in an attempt to save something but finally so much was burned the fire was allowed to burn itself out. The Wylies were able to get a lot of their household furnishings, clothing and Christmas gifts out with the aid of neighbors, firemen and other volunteers.
