The best in the state

Winside's Doug Lage and Wakefield's Steve Sorensen proved they are the best in the state in what they do. And what they do is wrestle. They picked up gold medals in last week's state tournament at Lincoln by eliminating all competitors. Sorensen, one of the state's four Class C grapplers to go undefeated this season, picked up his 30th win with a renewed acquaintance against his district title foe, John Guinn of Plainview.

But this time, the 138-pounder did not handle Sorensen the way he did before falling in the district tournament. Instead of Sorensen being forced to battle back from a 5-0 deficit, the Trojan grappler got a quick takedown for two points and went on to win 4-2.

Lage, who finished the year at 27-6 decisioned all four of his opponents, the last win a 4-2 handling of Howell's Greg Barta. Lage's win helped the Wildcats place third in the state meet- the highest the Winside team has ever placed at Lincoln.
