From the January 11, 1962 edition of The Wayne Herald:
Tree burning ends the season
First tree burning in Wayne brought over 70 residents out in sub-zero cold Sunday night, observing the close of the Epiphany season. More than 200 trees were collected by Boy Scouts for the Kiwanis-sponsored event.
The Kiwanians hope to continue the ceremony, making the event one of the highlights of the holiday season. A short message was delivered by Dr. O.B. Proett and group singing concluded the event.
