From the January 24, 2002 edition of The Wayne Herald:

Books for Babies program to begin

The Wayne Public Library Books for Babies program began as an idea nurtured by Lauran Lofgren and Jennifer Pommer in 2001.

This January, the program was put into action by Julie Osnes and Peggy Nelson (of the Library) and Sandy Bartling (of the Providence Medical Center Foundation).

The program provides a canvas tote bag filled with items for mothers of infants born at Providence Medical Center.

The Wayne Public Library Foundation purchased the tote bags. The Library provided board books, magnets and bookmarks to be included as gifts.

Staff members also compiled a booklet of finger plays and songs, along with other useful information from resources in the Parenting Corner. Brochures about the Books for Babies program and the Parenting Corner are also included in the bags.

Through this program, the Wayne Public Library hopes to encourage the families of the nearly 100 babies born each year at Providence to read to their children from infacy and make use of the resources available at the library as a family.
