'Igloo' provides numerous learning opportunities

More than 300 milk jugs and 'accessories' make up an igloo in the kindergarten room of Mrs. Gail Hochstein at St. Mary's Elementary School.

The project, which began in early December, was completed recently with the help of the fifth grade students at the school and Mr. Marl Evetovich, head teacher at St. Mary's, "because he is bigger than us," said kindergarten student Skylor Belt.

Mrs. Hochstein said she found the project, which incorporates math skills and social studies, on the Internet.

"We spent approximately 30 minutes a day and worked on our math skills by counting by 2's and 5's. We also talked about the people who live in igloos," Hochstein said.

Mrs. Hochstein and the kindergarten class and constructed the base of the igloo and worked to complete additional rows of jugs.

However, when the igloo got too tall, they sought the assistance of the fifth graders and Mr. Evetovich. The igloo is complete with an opening that is large enough for the students to walk through and be able to stand up inside.
