Laurel High grad co-authors book

A graduate of Laurel High School is the co-author of a new book outlining the history of the Nebraska Democratic Party.

Helping write the 450-page book titled "Shall the People Rule?" was Jim Pedersen, a native of Laurel and a recent graduate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Assisting with the writing task was Kenneth Walk of Lincoln, also a recent UNL graduate.

The book tells the story of the Nebraska Democratic Party from its brith in pre-Civil War days up to contemporary times.

"It is the closest we have to providing an up-to-date political history of our party," Hess Dyas, chairman of the state Democratic Party, said.

"We feel that Pedersen and Walk have done a masterful job in comprehensively and objectively telling the story of the Nebraska Democratic Party," he added.

The book explores the political growth of the state and the role of the Democratic Party in that growth.

A broad focus of national events and their impact is presented but does not overshadow unique local issues.
