Snow blows schools closed

Wednesday night's snow storm brought four inches of snow to Wayne according to official Wayne weather observer Pat Gross, but it was the high winds that caused drifting, thus the cancellation of many area schools on Thursday and Friday. Thursday night an additional tow inches fell in Wayne for a total of six in the two-day period.

Wayne School superintendent, Dr. Dennis Jensen said two school buses got stuck while picking up students early Thursday morning. Originally, Wayne had planned to start school one hour late but after the bus troubles, they called it off for the day.

Friday, Wayne students started school two hours late with other area schools including Laurel, Osmond and Randolph, cancelling for the day because country roads were drifted shut. "We had buses running Friday only to areas where it was obviously passable," Jensen said. "There were some areas they just couldn't get to." In fact, Jensen said one family with children in the Wayne Middle School called the school and told them to not even try to get out to their residence because of the snow packed roads. Those children arrived to school on Friday, via a tractor.
