'Animal arsonist' may have caused fire

The Wayne Volunteer Fire Department was called to three fires in the last three days, one of which was believed to have been caused by an "animal arsonist."

Wednesday night, they were called to 915 Main Street for a garage fire. The house, owned by Bill Carlson was not affected by the fire that destroyed the garage.

"We managed to save the structure, but I ordered the garage demolished," Wayne Fire Chief Dutch Sitzman said. "The cause of the fire is still under investigation."

On Thursday afternoon, the fire department was called to the Paul Sievers home, three miles east and three quarter miles south of Wayne.

The fire destroyed a hog barn according to Sitzman.

Although no cause has yet to be determined, Sitzman said it's possible a wild animal caught fire in a nearby burning pit and ran into the hog barn, setting it on fire. The fire has been ruled accidental.

While the hog barn was a total loss, there were no hogs in it at the time.
"We did manage to save two other barns," Sitzman said. "The hog barn was pretty much consumed by the time we arrived."

On Friday morning, the fire department was called to the Orville Sherry property on 805 Grainland Road for a grass fire.
