Everyone raves about Laurel's 'birthday bash'
Laurel's centennial celebration drew to a close Sunday evening and Co-chairman L.J. Mallatt said he three-day event was a definite hit.
"My feeling about the whole event is that it went extremely well," Mallatt said, adding that group efforts are what made the 100th birthday party so tremendously successful.
"In my estimate, we had one of the best centennials around. Everyone is raving about it."
The celebration got underway with a mock bank robbery and hanging on Laurel's Main St., activities continued throughout Sunday and featured hundreds of events from the grand parade to a musical pageant to a beard and bonnet judging contest.
The Centennial Pageant presented over 100 Laurel residents in a narrative and musical stage production portraying the history of Laurel. The pageant was under the direction of Marian Mallatt and Claudia Mallatt Dvorak.
An estimated 1,500 persons attended performances on Saturday and Sunday.
