Teachers complete successful careers
Two teachers, with a combined total of 46 years of teaching experience in the Wayne-Carroll schools, have retired as of the end of this school year.
Sharon Olson and Kathryn Ley were honored during this year's commencement ceremonies by Board of Education President Bill Dickey and presented plaques in appreciation for the years they have given to the Wayne Community School district.
Mrs. Olson began her teaching career the fall after she graduated from Stanton High School and taught in rural schools in Stanton County for six years while working on her degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
After graduation, she began teaching in Norfolk Public Schools at Monroe and Washington Elementary Schools. She remained there for nine and one-half years.
"I have taught the past 29 years in the Wayne-Carroll schools- 28 years in Carroll and the past year as a fourth grade teacher at Wayne Elementary, bringing the total number of years I have been in the teaching field to 44 and 1/2 years."
Kathryn Ley received her undergraduate education in the Wayne Community Schools from kindergarten through high school, graduating in 1966.
In 1986 she was offered the Vocal Music position in the Wayne Community Schools. Since she has been in this position, sshe has added Jazz Choir, Madrigal, Girls and Boys Glee, Music Makers, Middle School Swing Choir and Knitting Club.
In addition, she has directed 17 All-School musicals.
In her spare time, Mrs. Ley enjoys gardening, reading, knitting and traveling.
