Wakefield man discovers remnant of ancient mammoth
Someday, Sandy Otte may be able to start his own museum.
On his farm south and east of Wakefield, he has compiled a collection of Native American artifacts, buffalo skulls and other
interesting finds. His most recent addition to the collection is a mammoth tooth which weighs nearly eight pounds.
Otte discovered the tooth about two weeks ago on a Logan Creek bank near his home. It measures 10 by six by three inches.
His discovery prompted a telephone call to the University of Nebraska Geology Department. Sandy described what he had
found to Dr Robert Hunt.
Dr. Hunt asked Otte several questions and then informed him he is 95% sure his find is a mammoth's tooth. Otte plans to
send photos of the tooth to the geology department.
The Geologist informed Otte his find is at least 10,000 years old and could be as old as one and a half million years.
The creek area on Otte's farm once was a lake bed. With his recent findings, he wonders just what all he may dig up in the
future.
