More than $48,000 is raised during Relay For Life event

Hundreds of cancer survivors, caregivers, family and friends were on hand to take the opening laps of the 2012 Wayne County Relay For Life on Friday night.

A number of them were still at the Wayne State College Rec Center Track to take the final lap, which was actually for the first lap for the 2013 Relay, at 6 a.m. Saturday morning.

The threat of rain caused organizers to move the event indoors, but all other details of the event went on as scheduled.

Survivor and Caregiver laps kicked off the evening.

Food provided by a number of businesses and groups, including steak sandwiches prepared by the Nebraska Cattlemen, was plentiful throughout the evening.

A variety of games for all ages kept Relay participants awoke and entertained throughout the 11-hour event.

A midnight Fight Back presentation by cancer survivor Diane Roeber stressed the importance of regular check-ups and knowing the signs
your body is giving you.

More than $48,000 was raised as part of the 2012 Relay For Life. This included the purchase of more than 950 luminaries that lined the track in honor of cancer survivors and in memory of those who lost the battle against cancer.
