March 19, 2015 — National Champ: Wells wins Wayne State's first indoor title

After scratching on her first two throws, Sara Wells needed a big one to make sure she reached the finals in shotput. The Wayne State senior came through when it counted, hauling off a school-record mark that helped her claim the first indoor NCAA Div. II national title in school history. Wells' final preliminary throw of 53 feet, 1 inch, made her the woman to beat going into the finals, and she improved that best-ever mark by more than a foot in the finals, launching her second throw 54 feet, 2 3/4 inches to nail down a national title that, even a few days after winning the event, still had yet to sink in.

"It's an unexplainable feeling," the Albion native said during a Monday taping of the Wayne State Coaches Show. "Even when I was on the podium, it was like, 'Oh my gosh, I made it here.' It feels really great."
