May 16, 1985 — Mayor proclaims today as Poppy Day in Wayne
Mayor Wayne Marsh this week proclaimed today as American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Day in Wayne. Members of the auxiliary will be selling the red crepe paper poppies in downtown Wayne throughout the day. The poppies serve as a reminder of the sacrifices of thousands of servicemen in four wars. The funds collected on Poppy Day are used to assist needy veterans and their families. The poppies themselves are made by disabled and hospitalized veterans
by hand as part of a physical and psychological therapy program. Poppy Day is a tradition that started in the years after World War I. Soldiers of all nations have come to look upon the poppy as a living symbol of their dead comrades.
