From the March 31, 2012 edition of The Wayne Herald:
Consumer Challenge for 4-Hers held in Norfolk
On March 17, a total of 18 4-Hers representing the counties of Cedar, Knox, Madison, Pierce and Wayne participated in the 4-H Consumer Challenge at the Sunset Plaza Mall in Norfolk.
The 4-Hers were able to choose two challenges to test their consumer skills. They worked in groups of two, each group picked two challenges to investigate. Teams were then allowed to go to stores in the mall and decide what they would possibly purchase for each challenge.
The four challenges that they could pick from included: Design Decision, purchasing accessories for a bedroom; Shopping in Style/Attention Shoppers, purchasing a Spring outfit; Child Development, putting together items for a Babysitting Kit for a preschooler; and Youth in Motion, providing a healthy snack and physical activity for their club members during a community service project.
The actual items were not purchased, but 4-Hers investigated and explored choices that they would possibly purchase for each situation and shared their findings with Extension staff.
The staff then provided them with written comments.
The event is organized by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension in Wayne County.
