From the March 7, 2002 edition of The Wayne Herald:
Relay for Life Kick-off held
The annual Relay for Life Kick-off was held Feb. 26 at Riley's in Wayne with 18 teams signed up. Registration of teams is due April 25.
There was a good turnout at the Kick-off, despite the cold weather. A video of last year's Relay was shown and plans for the upcoming Relay were discussed. The Wayne Senior Center is working on a fundraising quilt again this year with Sandra Wriedt of Just Sew in Wayne blocking the quilt and Helen Beckmann donating the squares.
Donating food for the Kick-off were the following Wayne businesses: Taco's & More, KTCH, Wayne Herald, Pac N Save, Pizza Hut, Godfather's Pizza, The Max, Quality Food, and Riley's-Santa Fe Grille. Kaup's TV set up the VCR and TV. Skokan thanks everyone for their donations.
The motto for this year is "United We Stand." Goals for this year are $40,000 to be raised for cancer research with Vicky Skokan having a goal of $45,000.
Sponsors so far as of Feb. 26 are Copy Write, Taco's & More, Ktch, Wayne Herald, Pac N Save, The Max Bar & Grill, Wayne Stadium Sports, Winning Finish, Village Inn in Allen, First National of Omaha, Pizza Hut, Godfather's Pizza, Santa Fe Bar & Grille, State National Bank, and Sav Mor Drug.
The Relay for Life committee will meet at Vicky Skokan's house on March 14 at 5:30 p.m.
All of the members of the committee and their phone numbers will be in the paper next week so if anyone has ideas or wants to help, get ahold of one of them.
Anyone wanting to get a team together for this year's Relay can call Coleen Jeffries at 375-3729 or 375-4476.
