From the May 25, 1972 edition of The Wayne Herald:

Lightning Strikes School

Lightning did considerable damage to the Wayne Middle School Monday night when a bolt struck the school chimney.

The roof, said Principal Loren Park, was damaged when the flying bricks poked holes in the ceiling, causing water to leak through the two-story building into the basement.

According to Principal Park, part of the second-story corridor was cut off to the students because of the danger of more falling debris.

School Custodian Clarence Morris pointed out that the bolt apparently went down the chimney and struck the bottom where a seven-inch hole is located.
