Military recognized at Veterans' Day program

Tribute was paid to soldiers, both young and not so young, during Tuesday's Veterans' Day program at the Wayne Senior Center. This year's speaker was Dr. Vaughn Benson, Dean of the School of Business and Technology at Wayne State College. Benson shared stories of his father's military service during World War II and had a power point presentation on his son, Matt's, time spent in Iraq this year. Matt was in the Wayne area early this summer and is currently making preparations to deploy with his military unit to Afghanistan. Also involved in the program were the fourth grade students from Wayne Elementary School who sand the Pledge of Allegiance and Kevin Hoffart of BankFirst who read "It is the Veteran."

Officer for the day was Lowell Johnson and presentation of the colors was under the direction of Quad Commander Eddie G. Baier. Following the program, those in attendance were invited to participate in a balloon salute and lift off of red, white and blue balloons provided by Schumacher-Hasemann Funeral Homes, and the Wayne Greenhouse and Flowers and Wine. Refreshments, decorations and door prizes for the event were provided by BankFirst.
