'Takin' it to the strip'

What starts out as a joy ride on the street has turned into a joy ride on the strip.

I'm talking about drag racing. To many, drag racing is a sport, but for about 10 drivers from the Wayne area, it's just an expensive hobby.

"Drag racing is as expensive as you want it to be," Ron Heikes of Wayne, who has raced a 1972 Chevy Nova since 1994, said.

From late April to early October, you can find a number pf ;pca; drivers at a drag strip in the tristate region.

The closest track to Wayne would be the Nebraska Motorplex near Scribner. The former air base is a popular place for local drivers to race.

Wayne Denklau has raced the longest of the local drivers. He has been racing since 1978.

"It was the thing everybody did when we were growing up," Denklau said. "I decided to race on the strip instead of the street."
