October 7, 1974 — Exon: I'm Not Seeking Senate Seat

Governor J.J. Exon said in Wayne Thursday that Republicans are focusing attention on the possibility of his running for the Senate as a "ploy" in an attempt to put his Republican foe in the governor's mansion in the November general election. Exon, one of several Democrats present for the official opening of the Wayne County Democratic offices at 108 West Second St., said he has "no present intentions" for running for the Senate in either 1976 or 1978. Republican Senator Roman Hruska's term ends in 1976, two years into the next four-year Governor's term, and Republican Senator Carl Curtis's term end in 1978.

Noting that there is "no higher political office" in a state than the governor's post, Exon said that if he ever does decide to run got the Senate, it will be up to the voters in the state whether they put him in that office.
